Squires Gate hosted Nelson on Tuesday night looking to secure their first victory of the season.
Josh Kay returned from injury and made an instant impact. Just 7 minutes into the game Kay was sent through and saw the keeper off his line and made him pay. He side footed the ball up and over the keeper to put Gate in the lead. Nelson came back after the goal but Gate looked in control. Gates front three looked impressive but it was defender Josh Westwood who ran from his box to Nelsons to crest the next chance. When he eventually got into the box his shot couldn’t match the superb run and the ball dribbled wide.
The equaliser for Nelson was a mix of poor closing down by Gate and a superb shot by Wicks. The midfielder found himself with space at the edge of the box and fired into the top corner just before half time.
Into the second half good work from Kay and Cummings sent the later in behind and he pulled it back again for Kay but his shot went over the bar. The first chance of the second half for Nelson came from a corner but the header was cleared off the line by Richards and into Fletcher hands. Gate followed up with good pressure resulting in two chances but first Penswick then Ferguson had their shots blocked. Peter Wright up front found space in behind but his shit was narrowly wide. Josh Westwood was next with a chance but his header from a corner could only find the top of the net. More pressure from Gate but no one could get on the end of the ball fired across the box.
Gate took the lead late on when Cummings found space in behind to fire low past the Nelson keeper. But Nelson would get a goal of there own and with 5 minutes to go Ricky Mercer scoring from corner to level the game. In late drama in the game Gate could have scored late on but the ball was cleared off the line.
Gate are next in action this Saturday as they face Division one side Irlam in the FA Vase, kick off 3pm.
